Getting Started | Yoga for Beginners
What is Yoga?
Yoga is many things to many different people:
it can be a type of exercise, a way to reduce
and manage stress, a modality to heal an
injury, or a way of life. Many individuals
come to find Yoga because they are looking
for a different type of workout—one that
will challenge the body physically, but in
a way that is non-injurious. And Yoga is
a wonderful and safe way to exercise, especially
if you are recovering from an injury, or
dealing with challenges such as lower back,
knee or neck pain. But Yoga is also a lot
more than just a great workout.
Yoga means “union”, and its most fundamental
aim is exactly that: to unite the body, breath,
mind and spirit. Through as series of poses
(called “asanas”) and using special breathing
awareness and techniques (called “pranayama”)
you will experience both strengthening and
stretching in the muscles, a freeing in the
joints, and relaxation both at the physical
and mental levels. We invite you to come and
practice Yoga whatever your reasons, to play
and explore, and to be open to all the benefits
that Yoga may bring into your life.
Frequently asked questions:
I have never been
to a Yoga class before.Which class is right
for me, and how do I start?
You do not need to pre-register or make any
kind of commitment to the studio (but hopefully
you will make a commitment to Yoga for yourself!).
All you need to do is show up to a class
about ten minutes prior and fill out some brief
paperwork. We recommend those new to Yoga start
their practice by coming to any of our Gentle
or Beginning Level classes. Wear loose, comfortable
clothing, and try to come to class on a semi-empty
stomach. Although we encourage regular students
to purchase their own mat, we have plenty
of mats and props for you to use, so the only
things you need to bring is yourself!
How much is a class?
Your first class is $16, and if you are a
local resident, your second class is FREE!
You can continue to pay $16 for a single
class each time you come, but many students
who come with some regularity purchase a series
of classes. The larger the series of classes
you buy, the less expensive the class!
Do I have to be flexible to start practicing
Yoga?
No, Yoga will help you become flexible
at your own pace. It will also help you strengthen
your muscles and get in better shape.
The most important thing is just to start.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Yoga is practiced barefoot, so please
leave your shoes in our cubbies before entering
the Asana room. Please turn all cell
phones off, and do your best to be on time
for class so as not to disturb your fellow
yogis. And most importantly, remember that
Yoga is a personal experience, and never a
competitive workout or sport. Yoga will make
you stronger and more flexible, but these changes
come slowly, and with regular practice. Pushing
yourself too hard in any physical modality
often leads to injury, so the most important
thing is always to be patient and compassionate
towards your body and yourself. |

The benefits of Yoga are unending, on the
physical, mental, and emotional planes.
A brief list includes: stress reduction,
muscle tone, better circulation, stronger bones,
detoxifies body, corrected posture and body
alignment, mental clarity, weight normalization,
better range of motion in joints, lowers blood
pressure, increases metabolism, energy level
and stamina, can help facilitate emotional
healing, brings balance and harmony to the
body, mind and spirit.
